Beer was one of the first drinks to be brewed and consumed by humans, making it one of the oldest forms of alcohol still in existence today. In this post, we will explore the history of breweries as well as how they have evolved over time. Here are some topics we’ll cover in this article on the history of breweries:
Beer Through the Ages
Brewing is one of humankind’s oldest trades, and it’s been practiced by nearly every culture in some way or another. Beer first appeared in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) around 5000 B.C., and its popularity spread to Egypt, China, Greece, Rome and beyond. Imagine if we uncovered a barrel aged stout from 5000 BC… It was beer that accompanied explorers on Columbus’ ships to America, gave factory workers during Britain’s Industrial Revolution some down time, and fueled soldiers on both sides during World War I.
The Grandfather’s of Beer
If you want to get back to your primitive side, why not drink a beer? It’s been involved in our human history for centuries, and is as close to its peak as it can get. While many historians claim that beer is one of man’s oldest drinks, there are some who believe wine came first (or even a combination of beer and wine). Either way, history tells us that what we think of as an American brewery was actually pioneered by monks in Germany who became popular brewers in the 16th century. For example, Weihenstephan Abbey was founded between 811 and 835. The brewery is still alive today.
The Growth of the Microbrewery Movement in the 20th Century
The invention of modern refrigeration brought with it a greater appreciation for beer styles that were light and highly carbonated. In 1978, Anchor Brewing Company released its signature steam beer, proving that brewing small batches with top-quality ingredients could yield immensely drinkable beers. Today, at
