Thanksgiving is one of the most celebrated and favored holidays of the year. All around the United States people are traveling to loved ones to be together for the special day of giving thanks. According to TSA checkpoint data, roughly 2.3 million people traveled the day before Thanksgiving in 2021. The day before Thanksgiving is becoming a holiday in itself. Thanksgiving Eve is the biggest drinking night of the year and here’s why!
The hype of Thanksgiving Eve
Thanksgiving Eve, also known as Blackout Wednesday or Drinksgiving, is like Christmas Eve but for adults. Everyone who is 21 and older hits the bars to have a few drinks, catch up with old friends, play some drinking games, and let loose. Since Thanksgiving is so commonly celebrated, many people are fortunate enough to enjoy this holiday away from work. Most government offices, businesses, schools, universities, colleges, and other organizations are closed on Thanksgiving Day. So with no work on Thanksgiving and likely Black Friday too, some people have a 4 day weekend to enjoy. The night before Thanksgiving most local bars are packed with people, busy tending the bar and prepared to entertain the crowds with live music or a DJ.
Entertaining the night before hosting a big Thanksgiving meal is out of the question
It’s true! No one plans to host on the night before Thanksgiving. Hosting Thanksgiving dinner is a big job to take on. It involves a lot of preparation, time, and effort. The host of Thanksgiving is very rarely going to host the night before as well. That’s just way too much work. Most people want to fully enjoy themselves the night before Thanksgiving, which means no crazy parties at home - too much clean up and extra work. It’s now tradition that the wild ruckus is taken to the bar. It makes for a great time with memories made to last a lifetime.
Everyone is home and wants to see old friends
Many college students fly or drive to their hometowns to be with their families on Thanksgiving. The plan is to arrive a day or two early to meet up with friends from high school and catch up. Since everyone is home it’s the perfect time to hit the bars and update each other on college life and how things have been since leaving their hometown. For college students, Thanksgiving Eve or “Blackout Wednesday” is a common night to look forward to.
Thanksgiving dinner is a good hangover cure
Sometimes the only way to cure a hangover is a good home cooked meal. The aftermath of Thanksgiving Eve can be pretty brutal. If you drink too much and end up with a hangover the next day, at least you have a delicious meal to help bring you back to life.
As mentioned, Thanksgiving Eve is the biggest drinking night of the year and with so many people hitting the bars for drinks and fun, it’s important to
stay safe and out of trouble. Before going out to the bars make sure to have a designated driver established. Whether it’s calling a driving service at the end of the night or assigning a friend to stay sober, it’s important to have a plan prior to heading out.
